Judges Critique

Central Bernese Mountain Dog Club

Open Show
Sunday 19 th May 2019

Firstly, I would like to say a huge thankyou to the club for inviting me to judge their club show. It is always an honour for an aspiring breed judge to judge at a breed club event. The dogs were in good condition across the board and all very well presented. What we need to
work together on, as a breed is front construction and movement fore and aft. A lot of dogs have great side profile movement but can be disappointing fore and aft. I’m sure if we pull together, this is something that will be improved on over time.

A big thank you to my stewards Irene and my other (apologies I did not write his name down). Both were very competent and in excellent humorous spirit. The weather was kind which allowed the day to be completed outside on the grass in a supersized ring. I was
treated with the upmost respect throughout the day from both the committee members and the exhibitors, only 1 exhibitor chose to withdraw after their first class. And finally, a HUGE well done to the knew show manager, Julie Wright on organising and delivering a
smooth and well-run event, you were on the ball with everything!
CLASS 1 VETERAN DOG (0,0)
CLASS 2 MINOR PUPPY DOG (2,0)
1 ST . King, Green & Dedman’s PARWIZZ VOM DURRBACHLER WALD AT ARVELLA, 7months
old, masculine in head, good bone underneath a huge coat, a shapely boy and correct in
ratios. Typical markings. A fabulous temperament and he had an abundance of confidence.
To be super critical I would like a better length to upper arm and despite him being all over
the place in relation to his growing I certainly believe that he is going to be a very nice
exhibit in the future. BEST PUPPY IN SHOW
2 nd Wilson’s BLUMENTHAL CADFAEL, 6months and very much a baby. Darker markings and
masculine head, dark eye, he has very good angulation which made him a tad close behind,
but this should improve once he’s stopped growing. A good topline which held on the move.
A nice shapely puppy.
CLASS 3 PUPPY DOG (1,0)
1 ST Fairclough’s MONALOU GALLOPING GOURMET, 9months, masculine head that he will
grow into, super bone and shape with level topline. Nice length to neck, Good angulation
fore and aft and steady balanced movement. Super temperament.
CLASS 4 JUNIOR DOG (3,2)
1 ST. Miles’s JAYBIEN MODUS OPERANDI, nearly 13months, Gorgeous boy of average size,
excellent bone, super head and expression and rich dark tan. Good front angles and straight
front, good turn of stifle and stood on tight catlike feet. A super mover for a youngster,
bright future. RESERVE BEST DOG

2 nd Round’s COLLANSUES WILDEST DREAMS, 12months and an over exuberant character.
Good size but a little light in bone. Good head and expression. Stands on correct feet with a
well held topline. Difficult to truly assess- needs ringcraft.
CLASS 5 YEARLING DOG (1,1)
CLASS 6 POST GRADUATE DOG (5,0)
1 ST King & Green’s JOSEPH VOM DURRBACHLER WALD AT ARVELLA, 2 ½ years old and
looking well here and slowly maturing. An honest head and expression which is developing
well. Good length of neck, well placed shoulders and upper arm but fairly weak in pastern.
Well angulated behind and a sound overall mover.
2 nd King & Bramble’s Shirdees Leathal Weapon, 3 years old and very similar in shape to 1 st .
masculine head and expression, dark eyes full of mischief. Good length of neck and correct
front and hind angles. Well off for bone, sound movement front and back once settled. This
boy was ‘on one’ a bit today.
CLASS 7 LIMIT DOG (4, 1 withdrawn but attended previous class)
1 st . Fairclough’s MONALOU SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY, 4 years old, strong, honest head and
expression with well-placed ears. Good neck, ample bone, painted a mature shape today.
Strong topline both on the stand and on the move- movement which was sound in all
directions. My only criticism would be that he could do with a tad more length to his upper
arm. Lovely calm nature.
2 nd Watson’s JESTERBROCK ALPINE GLORY AT STEPDASHAR, 3 years old, masculine head but
slightly domed for me. Dark almond shaped eyes, good length to neck, topline could be
stronger. Ample angles fore & aft, good tail set and free movement.
CLASS 8 OPEN DOG (6,1)
1 ST Granger’s JAYBIEM ORLANDO BLOOM JW SHCM, 5 years old and full of maturity. I
thought he looked absolutely gorgeous today. Excellent type, strong bone, good length of
neck, super front and hind angles which then allows his movement to be correct. Tight cat
like feet and to top, excellent markings all round. BEST DOG & BEST IN SHOW
2 nd Griffiths, Orme & Miles’s JAYBIEM. WITHN’WITHOUT Y’ZEUS JW, 3 years old and very
similar to 1 st in type and shape- just a tad longer in loin. Good strong head, good bone and
another sound mover.
CLASS 9 VETERAN BITCH (2,0)
1 ST Atherton’s CH Athersbern Peronelle Blush, 7 years young, average size but a complete
package. Super type, feminine yet strong head with melting yet cheeky expression. Good
bone, correct ratio’s, tight feet, strong topline, stood 4 square at all times, sound and

balanced movement. One of the best happy temperaments. Pushed hard for both top
honours but I was faced with 3 beautiful examples in the challenge.
2 ND Clough’s BERNARK’S SUPER SUMMER, nearly 8 years old, feminine and pretty head, good
angles in front and hind, tight feet with effortless movement, such a happy girl showing no
age.
CLASS 10 MINOR PUPPY BITCH (5,1)
1 ST Wright & Kirk’s OBJET D ART DU HAMEAU DE BAIKA AVEC ROESILBERN (IMP FRA), 8
months old, strong but feminine girl, feminine head which will continue to develop, dark
and kindest eye. Ample bone for size. Good length of neck, well placed shoulders and
enough upper arm, level topline, good turn of stifle and a sound mover- promising.
2 nd . Small’s MALINDIBEACH BOODLES OF FUN, 7 months, quite small but correct in angles
and ratios. Feminine head and expression that will no doubt develop. Easy mover.
CLASS 11 PUPPY BITCH (3,0)
1 ST Gould’s WALDERSHELL LEXIELLENT, 9 months, big typey girl, big bone, super head and
expression, dark almond shaped eyes and well-placed ears. Light on her feet and easy
mover with excellent drive and a strong topline held. Just my type, but would like better
upper arm length. BEST PUPPY BITCH
2 nd King & Green’s OLIVIA VOM DURRBACHLER WALD AT ARVELLA (IMP NLD) TAF, 11months
old, smaller and slightly longer than first but plenty of time to come up on her legs. Lots to
like about this girl, feminine and pretty head with melting expression. Good angles all round
and a sound mover.
It is worth noting that I really liked 3 rd as well but she paced around the ring, I later learned
that she had been in a car accident the previous week so she definitely deserves a well
done!!
CLASS 12 JUNIOR BITCH (6,4)
Sound class.
1 st . See critique for 1 st in puppy bitch
2 nd . Sutton & Davenport-Willis’ NELSTEPHBERN DIOR FOREVA, 16 months, smaller girl who
left all her coat at home. Correct in angles and ratio’s and nothing to hide today. Feminine
all round, ample bone for size, excellent topline. Correct tail carriage and good feet.
CLASS 13 YEARLING BITCH (4,3)
1 ST Worrall’s JESTERBROCK DRAGONSTONE AT OAKBURN, 22 months, feminine and honest
head. Felt she could do with more bone. Good ratio’s and sound mover.

CLASS 14 POST GRADUATE BITCH (5,2)
1 ST Atherton’s ARVELLA PENNY LANE, 21 months, a tad bald today. Strong head with lovely
dark eyes. Good length of neck and really nice to go over, simply correct. Level topline, good
front movement and drive from behind. Very sound- like her.
2 nd Watson’s STEPDASHAR WINTERS WISH, smaller than 1 st but a shapely girl. lovely head
and expression, well placed shoulders, good hind angulation, enough bone for size and an
easy mover.
CLASS 15 LIMIT BITCH (6,2)
1 ST . King & Brambles SHIRDEES MISS CONGENIALITY JW, ooft where do I start, type, bone
and shape in abundance. I haven’t seen this girl in a while, but she certainly did not
disappoint. Strong yet feminine head and expression, excellent to go over, super movement
and excellent drive. I was truly spoilt in the challenge and she only lost out to me preferring
the length of loin of the open bitch. RESERVE BEST BITCH
2 nd . Granger’s SHIRDEES HARLOW JEAN OF SHADYBOWER JW, 4 years old, taller than most,
excellent overall conformation, feminine head yet strong in expression- always been a fan of
this girl. Good angles throughout but could do to move faster so she can extend her legs.
CLASS 16 OPEN BITCH (6,3)
1 st Mile’s CH JAYBIEM BURLI SHASSI, LOVE LOVE LOVE this girl and now she has matured she
has super type, a beautiful shape, style, good bone. Going over her she presents correct
angles throughout, a strong topline and correct feet. Her head is dark in markings and
feminine. Moved like a dream with her handler today. BEST BITCH & BEST IN SHOW
2 nd Watson’s STEPDASHAR SOMMER GIRL 5 ½ years old, strong head and good expression,
excellent bone, would like more upper arm, presented a lovely shape and was very sound in
movement.
