Central Bernese Mountain Dog Club

2016 Open Show

This year's Open Show took place on May 22nd at the club's normal venue at Overseal.

Unfortunately, due to extensive ground works, which had significantly reduced the available space outside, there was no room for the working cart course competition to be held concurrently, and consequently there was no carting presence this year.

Judge: Miss Emily Green

Thank you to the Central Bernese Mountain Dog Club for inviting me to judge their Open Show. The weather was warm but thankfully not too hot for the dogs, and a lovely outdoor ring was provided, which allowed the dogs plenty of room to move out. I was happy with my Best Dog and Best Bitch line ups and had some quality dogs to assess, I thank exhibitors for entering, and in the most part, dogs were clean, presented and shown to a high standard.

Thank you to my stewards Karen Bird and Julie Wakeland, who kept the ring flowing excellently.

Best In Show - Green's Alpenspirit Pure Pleasure for Arvella

Minor Puppy Dog - (1, 2)

1st - Wright's & Kirk's Arvella Mark of Respect for Roesilbern

6-month old confident puppy of good size. Excellent bone, nicely placed shoulders but forechest still to develop. Slightly over angulated in the rear, excellent tail set. Correct skull for age, with dark, almond shaped eye and good stop. Correct bite. Was well presented but unsettled on the move due to recent injury and withdrew from Best Puppy.

Junior Dog - (3, 4)

1st - Barsby's & Bonham's Halesbern Naughty But Nice

Good sized dog of correct 9:10 proportions with good body & depth for age. Although still developing he has a strong masculine head with flat skull, slight furrow and defined stop, although would prefer the ears to be slightly higher set. Fantastic topline both stood and on the move, and correct tail set. Good rear angulation, which reflects in good drive and extension behind, however I would prefer a tighter front, but today this was outweighed by his overall qualities. Handled well, in excellent coat and condition.

2nd - Wakeland's Shirdees Joe Dimaggio at Bramikdel

A nice young quality male, 16 month old with a lovely confident temperament, excellent head with classic markings, flat skull, correct almond shaped eye and dark in colouring with well set ears. Strong muscular neck leading to well placed shoulders, good bone, although a little long in body, which affected the overall balance for me, preferring the proportions of 1st. Handled well and very free on the move, covering the ground with ease but a little close behind.

3rd - Mead's Deberni Lucky

Medium sized dog who is still developing and growing into his frame. Good temperament and a strong masculine head, bite is incorrect but strong neck and forechest. Good topline both standing and on the move, and was at one with his handler today. Covered the ground well.

Yearling Dog - (1)

1st - Barsby's & Bonham's Halesbern Naughty But Nice

Post Graduate Dog - (2,2)

1st - Vaychkus' & Vaickus' Flintas Kalnli Slio (Imp. LT)

Maturing 2 and a half year old medium sized male, balanced overall with correct proportions. Moderate angulation in the front and rear, and a strong topline both standing and on the move. Correct bite, good stop, dark almond shaped eye, framed with correct ear set. Good tail set and carriage. Whilst I would prefer a little more masculine type as the dog in second place, he won this class today with his excellent movement as he covered the ground with ease with correct movement both coming and going. Nicely presented.

2nd - Miles' Orlando Bloom At Jaybiem JW

Mature male for age with excellent masculine head and kind expression. When stood in profile he presents a lovely outline with a super topline, which leads into a nicely rounded rump and tail set and good rear angulation. Correct tight feet and excellent proportions. Sadly he did not follow through on the move today and this cost him first place.

Limit Dog - (3,7)

1st - Green's Alpenspirit Pure Pleasure For Arvella

Easy winner in this class, 3 year old male, maturing and coming into his own. Good size of correct proportions with deep chest and good bone for size. Fantastic head with dark eye, slight furrow, correct bite and good depth to muzzle. Due to excess coat around his neck it visually appeared short and stuffy, but was actually of a correct medium length once I got my hands on. Excellent shoulders in length and layback and well developed forechest. Lovely rear angulation with rounded rump and good tail set. Strong topline and broad back. I personally would prefer a little more enthusiasm and sparkle on the move, but this did not detract from his correctness as he still covered the ground with good balanced easy movement showing good reach in the front and drive from the rear. pleased to award him Best Dog, Best In Show.

2nd - Wright's & Kirk's Materabern Good Friday

Excellently presented and well handled mature male who really looked the part, in profile of good proportions. Good sized with masculine head and correct bite and correct ear set. Good depth of chest but rather narrow, meaning he tends to tuck his elbows under his chest which affects his front movement. However, he has powerful drive from behind.

3rd - Avery's Lujento Morse

A taller dog than 2nd and not looking his best today but still much to like and appreciate. Good bone and strong, straight front legs, adequate angulation in the front and rear, strong topline and good tail set, but would prefer more breadth throughout. On the move he excelled, covering the ground with ease. Would like to see him again in full coat and condition as he looked immature and rangier when stood next to the others in the class today, and when on form could easily see him changing places.

Open Dog - (1,4)

1st - Jefferson's Meadowpark Boysown

Impressive mature male of 6 years old presented excellently. Strong, straight front legs and masses of bone for his size and proportions. Masculine head with kind expression. Well laid shoulders with correct angulation, however would prefer a little more angulation in the rear. Strong back with nicely rounded rump, good spring of rib and excellent breadth and depth of chest. Good reach and drive on the move although would benefit from carrying a little less wait. Overall and excellent dog and it is a shame he came up against the Limit Dog winner who just pipped him to the post today. Reserve Best Dog

Veteran Dog - (1,2)

1st - Miles' Ch Jaybiem Utwo JW ShCM

Large, solid 8 year old male of super type with great bone and proportions in full coat. Excellent angles both in the front and rear with well let down hocks. Strong back and excellent breadth and depth to chest. Seen this dog a lot over the years and seen him power around the ring but unfortunately today he was struggling on the move. Still cannot deny him his super qualities but in the Best Veteran challenge the female was more alert & felt today she really looked the part. Best Veteran Dog

Minor Puppy Bitch - (0,2)

Puppy Bitch - (2,2)

1st - Vaychkus' & Vaickus' Blue Aira Bernenskie Ranczo (Imp PL)

An attractive young female at 11 months old with a lot to like. Gorgeous head and expression with good stop, dark eye, though slightly round. Extremely feminine both in head and body but still strong. Excellent temperament. Super proportions and correct front angulation with strong straight legs and bone proportionate to size. Good topline and depth of chest and moderate rear angulation with a lovely rounded rump and tail set and carriage. Excellent correct movement with good reach and drive. Beautifully presented. For her age she is developing nicely and just lost out to the Open Bitch in the challenge due to maturity but will be one to watch in the future.
Best Puppy Bitch, Reserve Best Bitch, Best Puppy in Show.

2nd - Watson's Staubach Quiana at Stepdashar

Happy, confident puppy with a lot of maturing still to do and definitely at a growing stage at the moment. Nice overall proportions, good shoulders, a little bum high at the moment, which isn't helping rear angulation. Excellent tail set and on the move carried correctly. Nice tight feet. Pretty feminine markings on the face but eyes a little loose, which should tighten as head develops, correct bite. Good forechest and good depth of chest for age. This young girl needs some time to mature.

Junior Bitch - (1,3)

1st - Granger's Shirdees Harlow Jean of Shadybower

Lovely quality bitch of good size and correct proportions. Good head, correct bite and excellent eye shape and colour. Standing a little straight in shoulder but has correct angulation in the rear with well let down hocks. Has a super topline which she holds on the move, and a lovely rounded rump with correct tail set and carriage. Moved well, although would prefer a little more extension in the front.

Yearling Bitch - (3,7)

1st - Granger's Shirdees Harlow Jean of Shadybower

2nd -King's Ecalpharas Moonshine Over Leapingwell

Smaller female than first but a pretty feminine girl of shapely proportions. Strong but feminine head, a little round in eye but this does not detract from the overall expression, flat skull, correct bite. Moved out confidently and covered the ground freely. Lovely bitch and look forward to seeing her mature.

3rd - Jeffries' Esslinbern Binda Hip Hop

17 month old with an excellent confident temperament, really engaged with her handler. Medium sized female with sufficient bone for size, although 9:10 proportions, would prefer more depth of chest. Nice rear angulation and a well rounded rump, but unsettled on the move, especially at the front.

Post Graduate Bitch - (2,3)

1st - Granger's Shirdees Harlow Jean of Shadybower
2nd - Hundley's Bernfawr Imagination at Calizley

Small, confident bitch of nice proportions for size, lovely angulation in the front and rear, and very shapely and attractive. Appealing head and expression. Good forechest and excellent topline. She was completely out of coat today and wasn't hiding anything. Sadly paced a lot on the move making it difficult to assess her. Look forward to seeing her again in full condition.

Limit Bitch - (2,9)

1st - Vaychkus' & Vaickus' Blue Aira Bernenskie Ranczo (Imp PL)
2nd - Jeffries' Esslinbern Fenix Fire Lily

I particularly noticed all the dogs from this kennel had great muscle and were all in excellent physical condition, and this bitch was no exception. Whilst she has a good dark eye and flat skull head she would benefit from shorter muzzle. Nice depth to chest and good spring of rib, but standing a little bum high affecting topline. Covered the ground easily and was really engaged with her handler.

Open Bitch - (3,5)

1st - Atherton's CH Athersbern Peronelle Blush

Lovely quality bitch of super proportions and angulation both front and rear. Her attitude in the ring is super and her tail never stopped wagging. Enough bone for size and good topline. Good shoulders and excellent developed forechest, she has good breadth and depth to chest. Strong straight legs from the front, although to be critical, would prefer slightly stronger pasterns. Attractive feminine head and pretty markings and correct ear set. On the move she covers the ground well, just lost out to BIS as I preferred the overall movement of the male. Overall a quality female and worthy Champion.
Best Bitch, Reserve Best in Show.

2nd -Griffith's, Orme's, Slade's & Miles' Jaybiem Voo Doo at Potterspride JW

Heavier more compact female than first but still a lot to like and so engaged with her handler.Excellent bone and strong straight legs from all angles with nice tight feet. Super strong topline and textbook tail set & carriage. When standing today she seemed to be tucking herself up and her handler should watch this in future. On the move she excels, covering the ground with ease, driving from the rear and extending in the front.

3rd - Watson's Stepdashar Sommer Girl

A real shame this female came up against the other two quality bitches today. Another strong female with excellent bone. Strong head and correct bite, would prefer ears to be slightly higher set. Lovely front angulation leading into strong straight legs and tight feet, but does tend to toe in at the front when moving. Excellent angulation in the rear and when moving really drives and covers the ground well, lovely rounded rump and tail set and carriage.

Veteran Bitch - (1,6)

1st - Radburn's Elnside Little Dreams

8 and a half year old feminine female of lovely shape and size. For her age she had a great topline and profile. She moved steadily and did throw her right front foot, but for her age covered the ground reasonably well. Feminine head and kind expression with correct bite. In the Challenge she just presented a more finished package especially for her age against the other veteran who was struggling a little on the day.

A special thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge this class of champions. It was a great privilege to go over quality dogs in our breed.

6 entries / 4 absent

1st - Atherton's CH Athersbern Peronelle Blush

Stunning feminine 4 year old bitch with a very pretty expression, eyes tight and of correct colour, ears used to full advantage, correct bite, excellent angulation throughout, level topline which was held on the move, neat compact feet, moved well, presented in a super jacket and correct markings to top it off, a very happy girl.

2nd - Wakeland's CH Collansues Buildin Bridges At Bramikdel JW

6 and a half year old male well up for size with a nice dark eye in a strong head, strong muscular neck of correct length, strong shoulders and well ribbed, excellent bone, correct tail set, balanced throughout, moved effortlessly around the ring.
